Just to the south of El Golfo the road to Playa Blanca goes through the most recent lava flow, and the 'luna landscape' is quite interesting.  There are several black sand beaches down this road, but don't miss 'Los Hervideros'.  A stunning natural phenomenon where the ocean crashes into the lava in underground caves.  There are some excellent viewing sites that get you really close to the action!  Photographs never do it justice.
