If you are lucky enough to be there at the right time, Carnival is a wonderful three day celebration held in each major town. On the first night, the 'Murgas' (brightly dressed musicians who sing political satire) compete, on the second night judging occurs for the best band/costumes. The third day hosts the parade and a major celebration that goes on all night long. The parade is miles long, and typically takes at least two and a half hours to pass. Look at the shadows in the photos - the sun is high in the sky with the first pictures, and has just about set as the parade comes to an end. Everyone gets involved in Carnival somehow, but the 'serious' participants spend all year working on their incredible and intricate costumes, which can cost a small fortune.
